Chapter Twenty-Six
THE DINING ROOM at Ebony's was packed with all sorts of interesting creatures. The Beltane festivities at Vauxhall Gardens certainly captured the attention of London's crème de la crème.
They were treating it like a masked ball, with a strange theme of...how could Darius put it? Frolicking?
Darius had never been very enamoured with the fashions of his fellow countrymen. Being draped in intricately patterned gold thread on clothes one could only describe as 'colourful' eyesores was not his thing...at all.
He preferred deep sombre colours with minimal embellishment. Such simple fashion tastes, however, did not detract from his handsomeness one bit. The ladies loved his dark broody looks and preferred his rogue ways over any singing canaries.
Enjoying a final drink with Lord Henry, following the conclusion of their business, Darius pulled on a cigar, contemplating his imminent return to Mariam. Her unexpected confession of love had thrown him, once he'd had a moment to think about it. At the time, his only instinct was to say the words back to her. But now, he found them disconcerting and worried she may harbour asinine plans, like trying to leave him again.
Thank god for Jem. He'd set the lad the task of sending him word should Mariam try anything stupid in his absence.
"Aiden!" Henry called out, and looking at Darius, said, "I believe you and Lord Byng are acquainted, are you not?"
Darius gripped the stem of his wine glass tightly. He had no intention of pretending Aiden Farnsforth was anything more than an annoying ass, who depended on his family connections to keep him at the status he occupied in society.
"Winters," Aiden said with an arrogant nod of his head as he joined them. "Perhaps I have been too harsh in my judgement of you? You are showing excellent progress towards a respectable path by keeping company with Henry."
Affecting his best look of contempt, Darius leaned back in his chair to send the pompous ass a sizzling stare. " Farnsforth, you're like a bad penny. Always turning up in the wrong place."
Lord Henry grinned into his glass. He did so love it when the young bucks entered rutting season. It never failed to produce the most interesting outcomes, and Darius Winters was one to watch, of that Henry had no doubt.
Aiden didn't miss a beat. "Rumour has it you've taken up with a beautiful blonde, of the French variety. Though I could have sworn she was more of an English rose, as sweet as a Yorkshire White. If Iâd known she sought a Keeper, I'd have beat you to the punch. Mariam is utterly delicious."
Rage began to simmer in Darius's veins. Aiden was treading on dangerous territory.
"Been splashing the cash as well, I hear. Hope she's worth it or else you may end up in dun territory sooner than your meagre barrister income can compensate you."
The man didn't have a clue about whom he was dealing with. Darius's wealth far outstripped Farnsforth's thanks to his uncanny ability to grow it exponentially. The lord
